I have not tried the multi column yet but can I implement if for just a single subsection as it has 25+ products?

Yes. You can have only one section (or as many as you like) using different numbers of columns (including 1).
All you need to do is set the default section count (using a top level Custom Property) to 1 and the entire catalog will appear in single columns.
For the odd page you set that Custom Property to the number of columns desired and only that page will appear in columns.
